Two days later, I was asked to go see a movie and write a review of it so it could run in the next issue of the weekly paper.

In the late eighties, I wanted to read some Stephen King. I asked what I should read, and folks pointed me to The Shining. I read it, thought it was fairly engrossing, but it was never "scary" and I didn't bother reading any more Stephen King.

It arrived on TV in 1978 and, a critical darling but ratings nonstarter, lasted only one season.

So, being the kind of person I am, I tracked down the book (by John Jay Osborn Jr.) that inspired it. I read it. I loved it. I read it again. I've probably read it three times over the years.
